Restaurants, construction companies, and other businesses all across the country are closed today in solidarity with immigrants, to highlight how much they contribute to society. The #DayWithoutImmigrants strike is in response to President Trump’s immigration policies; organizers have urged both legal and undocumented immigrants to participate. Many high-profile entrepreneurs and restaurant owners are taking part in the protest and have given their employees the day off. A march to the White House is planned around noon.
One of the participating business owners is José Andrés, who owns several restaurants in Washington D.C. and is facing a lawsuit for backing out of a plan to open a restaurant at the Trump International hotel in D.C. “We are all one. We should not be fighting among each other, we should all be working together to keep moving the country forward,” he said.
