Another international acting figure with a law degree is John Cleese. Recipient of the 1978-79 TV Times award for Funniest Man On TV, Cleese’s vast resume of comedic roles is impressive. In 1987, Cleese won an Emmy for Oustanding Guest Performer in a Comedy for his role on the sitcom “Cheers.” More recently, Cleese had a recurring role on the hit comedy “Will & Grace” from 2003 to 2004, and was the voice of King Harold in all three Shrek movies.
However, John Cleese is best known worldwide for being one of the creators and stars of the “Monty Python” sketch comedy series, which first aired in 1969. The Pythons are what launched Cleese into worldwide stardom and a very successful acting career. “Monty Python” came as a result of Cleese’s involvement with the famed Footlights Dramatic Club at Downing College in Cambridge, where he studied and earned a law degree. If not for Cleese’s interest in law, one might make the argument that the legendary “Monty Python” series would not exist today.
