This year, however, the competition was especially stark, with a record number of nominees. The Colombian president Juan Manuel Santos won the Nobel Peace Prize. Although this past weekend years of diplomatic efforts between the Colombian government and the FARC were jeopardized when constituents voted against what could be, and what hopefully will be, a successful peace deal.

Other contenders included Angela Merkel, Edward Snowden, Pope Francis, and a Russian human rights advocate.
