If American Republicans get upset over President Obama’s use of executive orders, then they should be livid over what’s happening in Turkey. In one swift move, the government has effectively shut down the Kurdish media. These media outlets were among the last remaining in opposition to the new Turkish government and with their repression, access to uncensored information may become difficult.

The government has also culled more than 10,000 public sector employees in “the latest round of crackdown(s) against non-loyalists.” The removal of those in opposition to the new government demonstrates its intent to gain control. More than 1,000 retired police officers were deprived of their benefits and services. Education was also assaulted as more than 1,000 academics have been dismissed and Turkey’s president assumed the authority to appoint new presidents to the various universities.
These crackdowns are just some of the many tactics the Turkish government has recently employed. This new government, delivered by a coup d’etat, has much to answer for.
