The Pentagon just ordered 10,000 California servicemen and women to pay back the enlistment bonuses they received when they signed up to fight the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan nearly a decade ago. I know, WTF right?
The Pentagon doled out nice bonuses of $15,000 or more as an incentive when states like California were having trouble meeting quotas getting people to sign up in the mid-2000s. But now, after some auditing, the military realized that the bonuses were a bit too generous. Never mind the fact that some soldiers risked their lives and served multiple tours of duty overseas in exchange for these funds, the California Guard needs its money back.

So far the guard has recovered over $22 million from overpaid servicemen. I didn’t know you had to pay to serve in the military.
