Angela Merkel, one of President Obama’s most important allies in Europe, has announced that she will run for a fourth term as Chancellor of Germany. “The decision for a fourth term after 11 years is anything … (but) trivial, not for the country and not for the party, and I say it consciously also for me personally,” she said to reporters in Berlin. There is a lot of tension in Europe due to the enormous refugee crisis, Brexit, and the election of Trump, and Merkel is seen by many as a great, liberal leader.
But critics think she has been too liberal in letting refugees into the country and as right-wing extremism is growing stronger in many places, it might be a tough battle for her to win.
