Officer Who Killed Tamir Rice Fired for Reasons that Don’t Involve Shooting a Child

Yesterday, the Ohio police officer who fatally shot 12-year-old Tamir Rice in 2014 was fired. Rice was playing with a toy gun when officer Timothy Loehmann drove by and subsequently shot him. The investigation into the shooting has taken a long time, but when the decision to fire Loehmann was made public, it turned out that it was because of a completely different issue. Loehmann lost his job for lying in the personal history statement on his job application.

The officer who drove the patrol car when the shooting happened, Frank Garmback, will be suspended for 10 days for administrative rule violations. But Cleveland’s Critical Incident Review Committee apparently “found no fault in the officers’ actions leading up to, during and after” the shooting. For Rice’s family, it was a relief that Loehmann was fired, but the fact that it was for lying on an application “only added insult to the pain and grief.”
