Ever since the election of President Donald Trump, there have been concerns about how much it costs taxpayers to protect him and his family. And given that Melania Trump and the couple’s son, Barron, have decided to stay in New York, that protection has been pretty pricey. Now, there’s a petition collecting the signatures of people who think that Melania should pay for her own security or move to the White House. “As to help relieve the national debt, this expense yields no positive results for the nation and should be cut from being funded,” the petition reads.
In February, NYPD Commissioner James O’Neill said it costs between $127,000 and $146,000 per day to protect Melania and Barron. When Trump is in town, it costs $308,000. As of Thursday morning, the petition had over 256,000 signatures and information on the site says it will be sent to Senators Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren.
