Walmart, the largest private employer in the country, allegedly punishes employees who take sick days or who stay home to take care of a sick family member and does not accept doctors’ notes. The report, released yesterday, accuses the company of violating the Americans with Disabilities Act and the Family and Medical Leave Act. The workers’ advocacy group that made the report, A Better Balance, also claims that Walmart is discriminating against pregnant workers. For example, one woman didn’t get her doctors’ notes or hospital records approved even after having a miscarriage, and went back to work prematurely out of fear of losing her job. Walmart spokespeople said they hadn’t seen the report but denied any wrongdoing.
Walmart has long been criticized for its low wages and treatment of employees. Recently, the company was slammed again after a bizarre announcement that it will have employees deliver packages to customers on their way home from work. Labor experts have already raised concerns about that new practice.
