Delta Airlines has ended its four-year-long sponsorship of the Public Theater in New York’s Central Park after the group premiered its production of “Julius Caesar.” The play features a very Trump-like leader who gets stabbed to death. The show is part of the theater’s free event series “Shakespeare in the Park.” In this modern interpretation of the classic play, the emperor is a blonde man wearing a suit and a red tie with an American flag pin. He also has a wife who speaks in an Eastern European accent.
Trump supporters have expressed outrage at the play, claiming that it glorifies the killing of a sitting president. However, it is a 418-year-old stage play and the artistic director says it absolutely does not promote violence. The story’s message is actually the opposite, in that it shows how resorting to violence will undermine a democracy. Many people who have seen the play at some point expressed surprise on social media that more people don’t realize this, and pointed out that no conservatives were upset when the same play featured an Obama-like leader during his presidency.
