Fred Korematsu as the Google Doodle

If you used Google yesterday, you might have noticed that the doodle in the logo was Fred Korematsu, the civil rights activist who survived the U.S. government’s internment camps for Japanese-Americans during World War II. Yesterday would have been his 98th birthday and the day is officially celebrated as Fred Korematsu Day in some states.

But the Google doodle wasn’t just a celebration. It was also seen as a jab at Trump’s controversial immigration ban, as Google is one of many companies that is very critical of the order. Google’s co-founder Sergey Brin, who is Russian and Jewish and immigrated to the U.S. at the age of six, participated in the weekend’s protests in San Francisco, as did over 2,000 other Google employees.
