Last night, gunmen opened fire inside a mosque in Quebec City during evening prayers, killing six and injuring eight. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau called the act a “terrorist attack on Muslims,” but no motive has been confirmed yet. Police said that two suspects have been arrested. The attack happened at 8 p.m. after about 40 people gathered in the Quebec City Islamic Cultural Centre. Islamophobia has increased in Quebec lately, and this particular mosque has been targeted before. In June 2016, when Muslims were celebrating Ramadan, someone left a pig’s head outside with a note saying, “Bon Appétit.” Trudeau said in a statement: “we condemn this terrorist attack on Muslims in a centre of worship and refuge. It is heart-wrenching to see such senseless violence. Diversity is our strength, and religious tolerance is a value that we, as Canadians, hold dear.”
