This morning, a man carrying two bags and armed with a machete attacked a soldier on guard outside the Louvre in Paris. Police said it appeared to be a terrorist attack, as the man shouted “Allahu Akbar” (God is greatest) as he attacked the soldier. Another soldier then shot the man, who was wounded and taken to the hospital. Police arrested a second man after he behaved suspiciously. Not many details are known but police did say that the bags didn’t contain any explosives and an anti-terrorism inquiry has been started. In the meantime, tourists inside the museum were told to sit on the ground while all doors were locked.
Luckily, the attack was averted and no civilians were hurt. In the U.S., President Donald Trump received criticism for commenting on this Paris incident within a few hours, but not acknowledging the Quebec mosque shooting that left multiple people dead.
