An almost 40-year-old cold case has been solved. In 1979, six-year-old Etan Patz walked alone to his school bus in Manhattan for the first time. He never came back. Etan’s portrait was among the first to be printed on milk cartons and “missing” posters were posted all over New York City, but he was never found. But yesterday, former deli clerk Pedro Hernandez was found guilty of luring Etan into a deli basement and killing him.
Jurors said that they were divided and it took a long time to reach a verdict. There was no scientific evidence linking Hernandez to the crime, Etan’s body was never found, and the defense argued he has mental health issues. However, 56-year-old Hernandez admitted to the crime, and is now facing 25 years to life in prison.
