Donald Trump tweeted yesterday about the new Air Force One that is being built by Boeing. He said that it will cost $4 billion and that the order should be canceled. By doing so, he sent Boeing stocks plunging. The stocks were down $2 per share in the hours following the tweet.
But what were Trump’s motives? One theory is that he purposefully tweeted about Boeing because he was mad about an article in the Chicago Tribune. The paper posted an article that quoted Boeing’s CEO Dennis Muilenburg saying that one of the issues this election was “apprehension about free and fair trade.” It’s well known that Trump criticized free trade during his campaign, so the theory is that he took Muilenburg’s comments personally, and sent the Boeing tweet as retribution. Trump denies it, but given that he’s often pretty easily offended, it’s a believable concept.
