Oakland, California, is still reeling from a warehouse party fire that killed at least 36. The warehouse, dubbed the “Ghost Ship,” was a community for artists. It allegedly had over a dozen people living there illegally. There were also reportedly unsafe conditions in the warehouse, including a lack of sprinklers, and few exits.
Derick Almena, the manager of the space, was interviewed on the “Today” show, and his anguish could not have been more profound. As the “Today” show hosts pressed Almena on the conditions in the warehouse, he got increasingly frustrated, emphasizing again how upset and sorry he was. When he eventually refused to answer Matt Lauer’s questions, Lauer ended the interview. Here’s the full segment:
