United Nations Bans North Korean Exports After Missile Tests

On Saturday, the United Nations Security Council announced new sanctions against North Korea as a response to the country’s recent missile tests. The U.N. unanimously imposed a ban on exports of North Korean coal, iron, lead, and seafood. It also banned the hiring of new North Korean workers abroad as well as new investments in North Korean ventures.

This morning, the North vowed a “thousand-fold” revenge against the United States, which drafted the sanctions. North Korean state media wrote that the ban on exports are a “violent infringement of its sovereignty” and are the result of a “heinous U.S. plot to isolate and stifle” the country. The ban is estimated to be worth over $1 billion and will likely be a serious hit to the North Korean economy, as coal is the country’s largest export. “We should not fool ourselves into thinking we have solved the problem,” U.S. Ambassador Nikki Haley told the U.N. Security Council. “Not even close. The North Korean threat has not left us, it is rapidly growing more dangerous.”
