Defying the Supreme Court, some North Carolina House Republicans are trying to make gay marriage illegal again. A bill that was filed yesterday seeks to direct the state government to restore a ban on same-sex marriage and claims that the 2015 U.S. Supreme Court ruling that made the practice legal “is null and void in the State of North Carolina.” The bill quotes the bible and the decree of the “Almighty God.”
The bill also aims to make gay marriages performed in other states invalid in North Carolina. Democrats in the state are outraged and Wake County Commissioner John Burns called the Republicans behind the bill “embarrassments to the State of North Carolina” who “should be shunned from public life.”
