Steve Young

Law School Attended: J. Reuben Clark Law School, Brigham Young University
Graduated: 1994

So far we’ve mentioned some musicians and movie stars who chose to go to law school, but what about athletes? Well former NFL quarterback and two time NFL MVP Steve Young took time out of his professional football schedule to earn his law degree. In 1984 Young signed a ten-year contract for $40 million to play for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers after being the number one pick in the NFL draft. Then in 1987 he was traded to the San Francisco 49ers to be Joe Montana’s backup. It was at this moment that Young decided to go back to school and enrolled in BYU’s Law School, working out a special schedule in order to complete his degree.

Young spoke about the experience with Law Crossing saying, “In 1994, I finished the Super Bowl and went straight to law school the next day. It had to be a little strange for people in class, too…My law degree has been invaluable because now I’m in the private equity world, and even though I’m not practicing law, I’m certainly using my law degree daily.”

When was the last time you met an attorney with 3 super bowl rings?
