Brexit: It’s Complicated

The UK and EU are still trying to figure out the particulars of “Brexit.” But it also seems like the UK itself is trying to figure out what it wants, and it’s gotten pretty complicated. Take the recent debate over free movement, for example. British Immigration Minister Brandon Lewis is insisting it’s set in stone: freedom of movement between the UK and the Eurozone will end when the UK officially leaves the union in March 2019. He also said that the government is attempting to reduce immigration to “sustainable levels.” But Lewis’ statements are in contrast to other officials who have urged a more careful approach to free movement. Home Secretary Amber Rudd wrote in an op-ed in the Financial Times: “Put simply, the UK must remain a hub for international talent…We must keep attracting the brightest and best migrants from around the world. And we must implement a new immigration system after we leave the EU that gives us control and works in all of our interests.” There are other issues coming to light as well, including worries that negotiations could be delayed if the EU doesn’t receive certain concessions. Long story short: it’s all kind of a mess.
