A real life “Narcos” drug lord has been extradited to the U.S. from Mexico. Joaquín Guzmán Loera, better known as El Chapo, arrived in New York last night and is scheduled to appear in court in Brooklyn today. He ran his drug empire for decades with his own army of assassins and was known for always being a step ahead of law enforcement. He is facing 17 charges in the U.S. for crimes like corruption, murder conspiracy, drug importation, firearms distribution, and money laundering.

El Chapo escaped from prison in Mexico—twice. Most recently, he managed to escape from a maximum-security prison despite being in isolation and under 24-hour surveillance. His accomplices dug a mile-long tunnel leading directly to his shower. He will not be facing the death penalty, as Mexico doesn’t support capital punishment, and made that a condition of his extradition.
