Cardiff University studies recently revealed that when surrounded by drunk people and in a environment where they’re drinking, people often underestimate how drunk they are, how much they actually drank, and the risks that come with being around others who are intoxicated.
On the other hand, intoxicated folk felt more at risk when in the company of a person who was sober. That whole ‘I’m drunk, you’re sober’ scenario is never fun. You feel judged and bad about yourself.
Yet the same processes take place when you are drinking and see someone more drunk than you. You judging that person as “wasted” or “trashed” makes you feel good about how collected you are in comparison. Even if you’ve also had an unhealthy amount to drink.
