The situation in Syria is really bad. On Monday, U.S. officials accused Russian and Syrian forces of atrocities during their latest advances in Aleppo, saying, “The regime and Russia’s use of incendiary weapons have contributed to the unconscionable civilian deaths and suffering.”
And Russia suspended an agreement it had with the U.S. to dispose of its nuclear material, naming “unfriendly actions by the United States towards the Russian Federation” as the reason. Since the ceasefire with Russia didn’t work, the peace talks are now on hold. Obama has the choice of either ordering military action or standing by and watching while even more civilians die. But experts say he only has bad choices. One White House official said they are considering increased involvement, including “actions…that would further underscore the consequences of not coming back to the negotiating table.”
