Body cameras on police officers have been met with some anxiety. Supporters fear that the footage will never be “complete” and opponents fear that it would limit the ability of officers to perform their duties and perhaps present an unexpected risk. Yet, it is undeniable that since their adoption, police have seen a significant drop in complaints against officers.
A recent report out of Denver has revealed that a senior detective is now facing multiple charges after his body camera caught him red handed. Detective Archuleta attempted to “lose” $1,200 in cash while conducting an inventory of a suspect’s belongings. Not only has this action resulted in charges being brought against him, it has forced the DA to drop its case against the suspect Archuleta was meant to be arresting.
The tampering of evidence by the police is a serious charge that cannot be taken lightly. When confronted with the news that an investigation had been opened, Archuleta attempted to backtrack his position, claiming the money in question “must have fallen in his bag.” Ah, that would be nice, $1,200 magical mystical dollars sliding through the rush of air currents in the parked police car into his “war bag.”

In any case, it is likely that this detective has cracked his last case, the case of: “oh crap, I just got caught trying to steal from a criminal under arrest and this is definitely the only time in my career I’ve done this, I’m a good cop and I’ll just sit here and wait for all this to blow over.”
