Anti-American protesters gathered before the gates of the U.S. Embassy in Manila to promote a new vision for the foreign policy of the Philippines, one that does not rely on the presence of the United States. The protest however, took a very unproductive turn when a van driven by police officers repeatedly rammed and bloodied protesters, an incident that was caught on tape by AP videographers.

The United States was founded upon the right to protest and speak freely. To have this self-evident human right literally trampled upon in plain view of the American Embassy is not easy to watch. And it’s even more upsetting for the people of the Philippines, whose only crime was to demand their voices be heard in peaceful protest.
