Thousands of women are set to walk out of work today in protest over the horrific murder of Lucia Perez, a 16-year-old student who, while being drugged and raped, suffered a cardiac arrest. Lucia Perez was dropped off at a hospital early on October 8, and her abusers claimed she had overdosed, but the doctors quickly discovered evidence of “extreme sexual violence.”
Today women will wear black ribbons in solidarity with all the victims of sexual assault and abuse throughout the country. The hashtag #NiUnaMenos, or “Not one woman less,” has become a rallying cry for #MiercolesNegro (Black Wednesday). Domestic assault is a serious problem in the country; every 36 hours there’s a death attributed to it.
Since 2012 the government has attempted to stem cases of assault by stiffening penalties under the law. Hopefully, this Black Wednesday protest will lead to even more awareness.
