Before the preseason game between the Sacramento Kings and Israel’s Maccabi Haifa, Leah Tysse sang the national anthem. The anthem has been a subject of contention this past summer ranging from the censored verses that degrade whole groups of people to the fact that many Americans feel it still doesn’t represent who they are and their struggles. Tyssa decided to take a chance and took a knee while singing the national anthem.
Many people were shocked…like we didn’t know you could do that. In a Facebook post, Leah Tysse made an official statement as to why she did it:
This act embodies the conflict many of us feel. I love and honor my country as deeply as anyone yet it is my responsibility as an American to speak up against injustice as it affects my fellow Americans.
While others praised her act, others couldn’t help but feel…well…conflicted by it.
