Yesterday, actress Shailene Woodley was arrested for trespassing while protesting the construction of the Dakota Pipeline. The pipeline has drawn huge protests since it is being built near a Native American reservation, the Standing Rock Sioux tribe. People from the tribe say it would threaten their water supply and destroy ancient burial grounds. The pipeline supporters say this is not true and that it would create thousands of jobs.
In September, the construction was halted due to the protests that turned violent. But on Sunday night, a federal appeals court ruled that the construction could start again. On top of it all, the decision came the night before Columbus Day, which is offensive to many Native American groups because of Columbus’s reprehensible actions.
Dave Archambault II, the chairman of the tribe, said, “we are going to continue to fight. We will look at all of our legal options moving forward.”
