Fidel Castro Dead at 90

On Friday, legendary Cuban leader Fidel Castro died at the age of 90. References to Castro still elicit incredibly mixed emotions. For many he was a cold-blooded dictator who isolated the country and risked a nuclear war, by allowing the Soviet Union to build missile launching sites in Cuba.

But others saw him as a great leader who freed the people and gave everyone access to free healthcare and schools.

Castro was one of the longest reigning world leaders second only to Queen Elizabeth II and survived an impressive 600 assassination attempts, as well as 11 American Presidents. Many Cubans are grieving and the country is preparing for nine days of mourning. It’s also unclear what will happen to the U.S.–Cuba relationship now that Trump is going to be president.
