Obama Announces Recipients of the 2016 Medal of Freedom

President Obama doesn’t have much time left in the White House, but he keeps doing good things with the time he does have there. Yesterday afternoon he announced the 21 recipients of the 2016 edition of the Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian honor. On the list are people who have made contributions to the interests of the U.S. or to world peace, such as Ellen DeGeneres, Bruce Springsteen, Tom Hanks, Michael Jordan, Bill and Melinda Gates, and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.

“The Presidential Medal of Freedom is not just our nation’s highest civilian honor–it’s a tribute to the idea that all of us, no matter where we come from, have the opportunity to change this country for the better,” Obama said in a statement. The ceremony will be held at the White House on November 22.
