Fighting Fake News in…Newspapers?

In an ironically low-tech move, Facebook published a series of ads in U.K. print newspapers, teaching readers how to identify fake news. The ads appear to be part of Facebook’s commitment to stemming fake news in the upcoming U.K. elections, after the social media giant was roundly criticized for letting fake news permeate its site before the 2016 U.S. elections. Facebook said that it has already removed a ton of accounts and posts.

Some of the tips included in the ads were: “be skeptical of headlines,” “investigate the sources,” and “inspect the dates.” The tips also advise readers to ensure that the article they’re reading isn’t actually intended as satire.
