Kendall Jenner has had a rough couple weeks. There was her tone-deaf Pepsi commercial, the very messy Fyre Festival, and now, criticism over her appearance on Vogue India’s 10th Anniversary edition. The magazine put Jenner on a cover that was shot in Jaipur, India, and a lot of people are frustrated that Vogue didn’t take the opportunity to highlight an Indian model.
This is just the latest debate about cultural appropriation in the fashion world; in March, Gigi Hadid was criticized for appearing on the cover of the first-ever issue of Vogue Arabia. She is half-Palestinian, but some people claimed she only highlights her roots when it suits her and that Vogue should have put a Muslim model on the cover. And back in February, model Karlie Kloss, who is blonde and American, starred as a geisha in a Vogue photo shoot sparking similar criticism.
