The Trump Administration’s new budget plan is expected to be released tomorrow, but it has already been reported that it will include $800 billion in cuts to Medicaid over 10 years, mirroring changes included in the Republican health care bill that recently passed the House. According to experts, that would likely mean 10 million people lose their health benefits. It would also cut food stamps for low-income people and allow states more flexibility regarding work requirements for people who participate in social welfare programs. The budget also includes $1.6 billion in funding for the Mexico border wall.
These proposals run contrary to Trump’s campaign promise to leave Medicaid and Social Security alone. It’s unclear if this budget will see widespread Republican support, as large cuts to social programs could prompt a backlash from Republican voters.
