Chairman of the House Oversight Committee Jason Chaffetz, a congressman from Utah, has announced that he will be resigning his seat in Congress at the end of June. He had already announced that he would not be seeking reelection in 2018 and hinted at an early retirement, but his plans for early departure surprised many. Chaffetz has come under fire for his handling of the House investigation into Trump’s relationship with Russia, facing criticism in his own district and nationwide. Representative Trey Gowdy is expected to take over as chair once Chaffetz officially departs. It’s unclear what is next for Chaffetz. Some have speculated he’ll try for a gubernatorial run; there are also rumors floating around that he will end up with a lucrative pundit gig at Fox News.
