Last night, attentive New Yorkers noticed that the lights on the Statue of Liberty suddenly went dark. At first no one knew what was going on, but the symbolism seemed too timely to be a coincidence, at least according to Twitter.
The statue, which symbolizes freedom and friendship, was dark for two hours. According to the National Park Service it was a “temporary, unplanned outage” linked to repair work on damage caused by Hurricane Sandy.
And by midnight the lights were back on.
But the statue has been the site of protests before–last month, someone hung a huge banner with the words “Refugees welcome” from its base. Many people took the power outage as a sign that Lady Liberty is definitely on the side of women, refugees, and other minorities.
