The Supreme Court Will Not Hear Gavin Grimm’s Case

Yesterday, the Supreme Court said that it will not hear Gavin Grimm’s case. Grimm, 17, is transgender and had asked to be allowed to use the boys’ locker room and bathrooms in his Virginia high school. Grimm has been fighting the school for two years on this matter. SCOTUS was scheduled to hear the case on March 28, but news broke yesterday that it had declined to do so, and the case will go back to the appeals court. This may be in light of President Donald Trump’s reversal of President Barack Obama’s directive that allowed students to use whichever bathroom corresponds with their gender identity.

Grimm has become a national figure after transgender actress Laverne Cox urged people to “Google Gavin Grimm” in her speech at the Grammys. Despite the recent setback, Grimm remains hopeful: “I definitely think I’ve been seeing a real-world, very positive impact with what I’m doing and with just the conversation in general, and I can’t be more overjoyed to hear that,” he said.
