South Korea’s Ousted President Under Arrest

South Korea’s former President Park Geun-hye, who was ousted from office earlier in March, has now officially been arrested. She is charged with abusing power and accepting bribes. Last year it was alleged that she had helped her friend Choi Soon-sil extort large sums of money from business conglomerates such as Samsung. She was also accused of giving Choi access to official documents and information. Park was the country’s first female president and the first democratically elected president to be jailed. News of the corruption created a huge scandal in the country.

Park was taken today to Seoul Detention Center where she will wear a regular, standard prison outfit and live in a cell like other inmates. There will be an election to choose a new president on May 9.
