On Sunday night, Paris police shot a Chinese man to death in his home, in front of his children. On Monday, protesters gathered outside a police station to pay homage to the deceased, and the event quickly turned violent. Three police officers were reported injured and 35 protesters arrested. Police claimed 56-year-old Liu Shaoyo attacked officers who responded to calls of domestic violence with a sharp object and that they had no other option than to shoot him. But the man’s children say he went to open the door holding a knife that he was using to prepare dinner. Allegedly, a neighbor had called the police. The officers then smashed the door in and shot him, the children said.
China’s foreign ministry urged French authorities to conduct a full investigation into what really happened. France is estimated to have the largest Chinese community in Europe with about 600,000 people. There have been ongoing protests against police violence in France for the past few months, and this latest incident just added fuel to the fire.
