A California artist has been receiving death threats after putting up a controversial billboard in Phoenix, Arizona. The billboard portrays President Donald Trump wearing a Russian pin surrounded by icons that look like a hybrid between swastikas and dollar signs. She also painted mushroom clouds that look like clowns behind Trump. Karen Fiorito was commissioned by a Phoenix art gallery to make the billboard and said she wanted to create a symbol of resistance. The billboard also depicts five hands spelling the word “unity” in sign language.

Fiorito said people have been calling her house and threatening her and her husband. She has been called both a “communist” and a “Satan worshipper.” “I feel that I’m really just speaking for other people who might not be able to say anything, or speak out, or may not feel safe in doing so,” she said. The piece will stay up for the remainder of Trump’s presidency.
