Germany Votes to Allow Same-Sex Marriage!

In the midst of Pride month, Germany’s parliament has voted to legalize same-sex marriage, joining many of its European neighbors. Although Chancellor Angela Merkel has long been opposed to the idea of gay marriage, she officially opened up the possibility of a vote on the matter in an on-stage interview just a few days ago. She said that she had noticed that most other parties are supportive of gay marriage, so she would allow a free vote on it. What changed her mind was having dinner with a lesbian couple that had eight foster children; she called it a “life-changing experience.”

After Merkel’s interview, supporters of gay marriage pushed for a vote, and this morning, a majority in parliament voted in favor of gay marriage. Even though Merkel personally voted no–likely a political move given that she has a general election later this year–people are jubilant. Even though the country is largely Catholic, 83 percent of Germans do support gay marriage according to a recent survey.
