“Handmaids” Staged a Protest Against the Senate Health Care Bill

Yesterday, protesters in support of Planned Parenthood dressed as handmaids to protest the new Senate health care bill. Dressed like characters in the Hulu show “The Handmaid’s Tale,” the protesters said that they wanted to convey a “clear message to our administration and the Senate about how seriously we take their decisions and how radically it can affect our lives.” The show is based on a book with the same name. It depicts a dystopian future in which women only exist to reproduce.

According to a survey conducted by NPR and PBS, only 17 percent of Americans approve of the bill. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said yesterday that he would delay the vote on the bill, as not enough Republicans senators will vote for it to pass. The vote will instead take place after the Senate’s Fourth of July recess, which will give lawmakers time to make necessary changes.
