The G20 meeting in Hamburg, Germany will take place this week. And leading up to the two-day summit, thousands of people are already preparing to demonstrate. According to German authorities, tens of thousands of protesters are expected to march. They are mainly opposing globalization, corporate greed, and governmental failure to deal sufficiently with climate change. Officials said they expect that about 8,000 protesters will be prepared to use violence. Approximately 20,000 police officers will be deployed to the streets. Last night, police had to use water cannons on 500 left-wing protesters who started protesting early. Some protesters had to be dispersed as they started setting up tents around the city, and water cannons and pepper spray were used to move several hundred protesters who were blocking the roads in the St Pauli neighborhood. Hamburg has a long tradition of protests, and many weapons have already been seized. Chancellor Angela Merkel pleaded protesters to stay peaceful, and said, “those who turn to violence mock democracy.”
