On Saturday, Paul Ryan took to Instagram to post a proud photo of himself with a large and homogenous group of interns. The photo was captioned: “I think this sets a record for the most number of #CapitolHill interns in a single selfie. #SpeakerSelfie.”

Harmless, right? A lot people don’t seem to think so! One user said (in the style of Trump): “Lack of diversity! And you all not even notice. Sad!”

Unfortunately, the fact that there are apparently no people of color in that intern group reflects the simple truth. For example, a study released by the Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies in December 2015 found that people of color made up just 7.1 percent of senior Senate staff, whereas they comprise 36 percent of the U.S. population. Still, it doesn’t hurt to try and hire a diverse staff.
