Nine men have been charged with the brutal beating and subsequent death of Bakari Henderson, a 22-year-old American tourist in Greece. Seven of the men are Serbian, one is Greek, and one is British. Henderson was at a bar with friends on the island of Zakynthos, a coastal resort area. Specifically, they were at the Laganas resort, which attracts young crowds and is known as a party hotspot. According to some reports, Henderson and his friends tried to take a selfie with a waitress and the bouncer threw them out. However, other reports say that the Americans just put their drinks down near another group of patrons, who became incensed. Regardless of what happened inside the bar, security footage showed a group of men beating Henderson outside. They attacked him for about 30 seconds until he was unconscious, then he was transported to a nearby hospital and died from his “severe head injuries.”
Henderson had just graduated from the University of Arizona, which he attended on a full scholarship. His family is now working with the American Embassy in Greece to bring his body back to the United States, and calls continue for more news coverage and attention from U.S. leaders regarding Henderson’s tragic death.
