This weekend, Australian police shot a man and woman dressed up as the Batman villains the Joker and Harley Quinn at a nightclub. About 40 police officers stormed the club’s Saints and Sinners Ball, which promised to be a “no holds barred extravaganza of adult fun,” at 3 a.m. on Saturday morning. The pair were reportedly shot while involved in a sex act after police mistook the fake Joker’s toy gun for a real weapon. The man was shot in the stomach and is in a critical condition, and the woman was shot in the leg. However, the nightclub’s owner said their only crime was keeping up with the “nature of the event.” But it also appears that the Joker stayed in character for too long; he allegedly drew his fake gun when the officers approached him and didn’t drop it. “When a firearm is pointed at you in these circumstances, police are not sure at that stage whether it is real or an imitation,” said Superintendent Lisa Hardeman.
