In other news that seems to prove that the world is heading in a terrible direction, Russia voted on Friday to decriminalize domestic violence. This only applies in cases that do not cause “substantial bodily harm.” If an abuser violates those rules, they could have to pay a fine equivalent to $500. Only three legislators voted against the measure. President Vladimir Putin has not yet signed the bill, but he has expressed that he is in favor of it.
Russia is one of only three countries in Europe and Central Asia that lacks specific laws targeting domestic violence, and according to a survey conducted by a state-run pollster, 19 percent of Russians think it’s okay to hit your partner or child “in certain circumstances.” Critics say this law will encourage more violence and fuel crime.
