The Trump administration has been very active its first week in office. Now it is preparing executive orders that would cut U.S. funding to the United Nations significantly, as well as contributions to other international organizations. One of the orders states that U.S. funding will not go to any international body that gives full membership to the Palestinian Authority or Palestine Liberation Organization, supports abortions, bypasses sanctions on Iran and North Korea, or is influenced by a state that sponsors terrorism. If President Trump signs the order, it would affect the U.N. dramatically, as it relies heavily on U.S. funding for its peacekeeping operations. Trump has expressed dissatisfaction with the U.N., especially after the Security Council voted to condemn Israeli settlements in December. He tweeted that it’s “just a club for people to get together, talk, and have a good time.”
Also, in the beginning of January, Rep. Mike Rogers from Alabama proposed a new bill, the American Sovereignty Restoration Act of 2017, which calls for the United States to withdraw completely from the United Nations. It also suggests that the U.N. headquarters should be removed from Manhattan and that the U.S. will no longer be involved with the World Health Organization.
