Last night’s 59th annual Grammy awards saw a long line of celebrities and artists getting political. On the red carpet, rapper Schoolboy Q arrived wearing a hot pink sweater with the words “GIRL POWER.” The host was James Corden and he opened by falling down the steps, losing his shoe, and performing a rap that included: “Live it all up because this is the best and with President Trump we don’t know what comes next.”
Paris Jackson referenced the Dakota Pipeline protests, JLo quoted author Toni Morrison’s words about being an artist in politically difficult times, and Katy Perry wore an armband with the word “PERSIST.” Beyoncé was applauded for her comments on race; Adele praised Beyoncé. Actress and transwoman Laverne Cox talked about Gavin Grimm, the young man whose case about trans access to bathrooms has made it all the way to the Supreme Court. And last, but not least, A Tribe Called Quest performed with Busta Rhymes, who took shots at the president and called him “President Agent Orange.”
