Yesterday, Turkish officials detained four men suspected of being members of ISIS who were planning to carry out a “sensational” terror attack in Turkey. They also seized 24 suicide belts made with 330 pounds of explosives and fortified with metal pieces. The arrests were made on the border of Syria, but the nationalities of the men are unknown. The arrests came as CIA Director Mike Pompeo arrived in Turkey for discussions with the country’s leadership about how to fight ISIS.
Turkey is hoping to restore its relationship with the U.S. after it became strained under the Obama Administration following Turkey’s extradition request for the cleric Fethullah Gulen. Gulen lives in the U.S. and Turkish President Erdogan believes he is the brain behind the failed coup d’état last summer. Turkey also arrested more than 400 ISIS suspects last Sunday, in one of the biggest efforts against the terror group inside the country.
