American online retail company Amazon is being bashed in Scotland after employees have been found living in tents to save money on their commute.
“Amazon should be ashamed that they pay their workers so little that they have to camp out in the dead of winter to make ends meet,” said Willie Rennie, leader of the Scottish Liberal Democrats. He has long called for the company to improve conditions for its workers. Last month, it was revealed that employees sometimes work 60-hour weeks for just a little over minimum wage. Amazon officials wrote in a statement that they “pay competitive wages”–£7.35 an hour. A pound is about $1.27 right now. It’s not exactly a fortune, and considering that the holiday season is the busiest of the year, maybe these hardworking Scots deserve a Christmas bonus.
